What Is Open-Air Auto Transport?

Open-air transport refers to the process of vehicle transport where vehicles are moved in open trailers that do not have enclosed roofs and sides. This method is the most popular and cheapest way of transport. Key characteristics of this method are:

  • This method of transport is carried out in open trailers or trucks that lack enclosed roofs or sides.

  • Vehicles are exposed to the elements such as wind, rain, dust, and debris during transit.

  • Open-air transport is a less expensive method of shipping and the most cost-effective way to ship a car.

  • This method is the most frequently used approach in auto shipping for vehicle transportation.

Open-air transport is mostly carried out using trailers, which can be one-deck or two-deck, carrying 2-3 or 7+ vehicles per trip, respectively. On two-deck trailers, smaller vehicles are typically placed on the lower deck, and larger vehicles are on the upper deck. The trailers used in open-air shipping range from 75 to 80 feet in length. So, open-air trailers offer no protection from the elements but are suitable for the standard sedan, pickup truck, or SUV.
